In August 2006 Mark took a photograph of a soldier standing to attention in front of Chairman Mao's Mausoleum in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, capital of The Peoples' Republic of China.

On returning to England Mark entered the picture into China Radio International's Digital Photography Contest.

An international panel chose Mark's picture as the best in the People & Culture category, awarding top prize of a pair of ornate Chinese snuff bottles, hand-painted on the inside in the ancient Chinese tradition.
