Radio Gibraltar
The British overseas territory of
Gibraltar, a limestone outcrop on the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula,
occupies a commanding position at the western gateway to the Mediterranean Sea.

The Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) operates GBC Television and Radio Gibraltar.
GBC operations
are overseen by a board, said to be modelled on the BBC's Board of Governors. The
broadcaster's services are partly funded by TV licence fee revenues.
Spanish radio and TV stations, and broadcasts for British forces in
the territory, can also be received.
Mark started out on the Saturday Late Show and Sunday Mid-Day Show at Radio Gibraltar. He made rapid progress and was soon presenting all three daily Focus News shows and had been promoted to Government Commentator.
Mark's reports and interviews on the Focus News shows drew a large audience.
Every Wednesday Mark and his Radio Gibraltar colleague Norma Delgado hosted the Gibraltar Lottery draw, live from The Piazza.

Crossed Wires
Part of Mark's job at Radio Gibraltar was to put the Protestant and Catholic church services on air.
Depending which weekend it was they took it turns to have their services
broadcast. Each of the cables carrying the signal from Gibraltar's two cathedrals
and eight churches led to a hole on the patch board at Radio Gibraltar and Mark's
job was to put the plug in the right hole according to which service was to be broadcast. As none of the
holes were marked there was always an element of guess work involved in doing
this.

One Sunday, during what he thought was the scheduled Protestant broadcast
Mark was surprised to hear the cleric announce that "Communion will now be taken"
(usually only done in Catholic churches) So when the priest paused for breath he pulled out the plug and quickly put it into another hole at random,
hoping it would connect to a Protestant church service. It didn't. It was the Catholic Cathedral, and all of a sudden some bishop or some such thing announced the start of Communion in that place of worship. So out came the plug, then into another random hole. This time the airwaves were filled with raised voices and a
heated argument, punctuated with a torrent of 'descriptive' words more suited to a rugby club stag night. Shocked, Mark pulled out the plug again and in desperation rammed it into a fourth hole. Success - this time he got lucky and the Protestants were finally
on the air. The following day Mark discovered he'd made it into the local press.
In giant letters the headline posed the question:
