History
Well, I left school at 17 and trained to be an electronics engineer. Ugh. At the same time I was working as a newspaper photographer to enable me to qualify for Sunderland University's Communication and
Media Course. After graduating I worked as a reporter at a number of
newspapers in the EMAP Group, before re-locating to the British Overseas
Territory of Gibraltar - then still a British colony where I worked
as Radio Gibraltar's Government Affairs Broadcaster. For about two years I presented
live radio commentary during meetings of Gibraltar's Parliament at the House of
Assembly.

Lots of additional work followed, including hosting Radio Gibraltar's
top rated news shows, reporting for the TV news, presenting a prime time consumer affairs TV show and hosting the Gibraltar Government Lottery Draw. The picture was taken at the Piazza, Gibraltar during an outside broadcast. |

Then I moved to Spain, following a job offer from the Onda Cero Group - a commercial radio company that owns a network of 180 stations throughout Spain. Together with a small team of English-speaking radio professionals I helped create Spain's first English language commercial radio station - Onda Cero
International. Soon afterwards the station won the top prize in the Premio Onda National Radio Awards.
Bigger things were to follow, and after three or four more years in Spain I was offered a job at one of the biggest and most succesful radio stations in the UK - Classic FM - where I stayed for what seemed like years. Well, it was quite a few years in fact, and very enjoyable too. As well as presenting my show five days a week, I wrote - and still write - for the Classic FM
Magazine and also reported from all over the world for the Classic FM Travel Show.
After I left Classic FM in February 2008 I worked briefly at the Big L, a tiny AM radio station based in Frinton-on-Sea in Essex. I had gone from one of the biggest stations in the country to one of the smallest in just a week. The Big L project was a very interesting experiment in radio and communal living. I moved into the 'Big L house' with some of the biggest names in British broadcasting - former Radio 1 DJs Mike Read and Adrian John, ex-Radio 2 host David Hamilton, offshore radio expert and broadcaster Ray Anderson and former Dr Who and Carry On Doctor actor Steve Garlick. The living room was full of pictures Mike had made out of empty chocolate bar wrappers and he later staged an exhibition of these imaginitive works at an art gallery in Brighton.
Despite the happy atmosphere at Big L, both at the radio station and in the house, I began to sense that it was time to move on, and set about negotiating a move to one of the biggest broadcasting organisations in the world. My departure coincided with Big L's descent into unresolvable financial difficulties, which ultimately led to the total demise of the station in the summer of 2008. Such a shame. It was one of the most interesting and enjoyable times of my life. So in June 2008 I moved to Beijing, capital of the Peoples' Republic of China, not really knowing what to expect, and with the Olympic Games just a few weeks away. So much has happened in the intevening time. There's neither the time nor the space to write it all down here, so the details will have to wait. But I can tell you that China is probably nothing like you imagine it to be. I am constantly surprised at how ill-informed I was about this vast country, before coming to live here.
I now live in West Beijing and present a daily lifestyle magazine show on China Radio International's FM and shortwave services. From mid March 2009 I have also hosted a weekly classical music show, not unlike the one I presented on Classic FM for so many years. So in one sense the wheel has gone full circle. Give me a shout if you're coming out this way and would like to drop by for a cup of Iron Buddah tea and some of the local snacks. It's always nice to catch up with old friends.
